In Champaign-Urbana stopflock.org is a movement to get it kicked off campus and in Champaign.

January

The Roses (2025, movie)

Kumail Nanjiani: Night Thoughts (2025, standup special)

Bugonia (2025, movie). Stars Stone, Plemons, and directed by Lanthimos)

All Creatures Great & Small (2025, season 6)

The Roses was a fun and silly movie directed by Jay Roach who did Meet the Parents and Austin Powers (an incredibly formative movie series for me). I’m glad movies like this are still getting made but I wouldn’t say it was great by any stretch of the imagination.

Kumail’s new special was very funny and I recommend checking it out. I mostly know him from Silicon Valley and a few other bits and bobs so it was nice seeing him doing solo standup.

Bugonia is a work of art and has a <del>fun</del> bizarre twist.

All Creatures Great and Small continues to be our post-holidays wholesome cup of cheer we all desperately need in January. Quaint, low-stakes, and farm antics about. I especially like Samuel West and seeing him in Slow Horses is a treat.

February

The Night Manager (2026, season 2)

Sherlock (2010-2017, seasons 1-4)

Malcolm in the Middle (2000-2007) watched seasons 2 and 3, still watching season 4.

The Night Manager season 1 from 2016 is an all-timer. After radio silence after 10 years, I’m not sure season 2 lived up to those heights but it was damn good.

Sherlock is another all-timer, starring Cumberbatch and Freeman. This was a rewatch for us, having watched it originally season by season as it aired over the course of 2010 to 2017. It’s especially interesting watching it now as it predates their meteoric rise to fame. This is post-The Office (UK) but pre-The Hobbit for Freeman and pre-Doctor Strange for Cumberbatch. It’s fair to say this show played a big role in them landing those parts. I think the fourth season overstayed its welcome and was virtually unrecognizable from the humble beginnings of the first season with MI5-level stakes and just… idk it kinda lost the plot.

We’re still very much enjoying Malcolm in the Middle, trying to burn through 7 seasons (first time watch) before watching the 2026 reunion special.

March

The Paper (2025, season 1)

Fallout (2024, season 1)

As big fans of The Office I sat on The Paper at first. I knew eventually I’d check it out but wasn’t in any rush. This show eventually won me over but it took a little warming up. Similar to The Office or Parks and Rec, I expect them to find their voice and hit a stride in season 2.

I never played the game but enjoyed Goggins in White Lotus and Purnell in Yellowjackets. The first episode is especially cinematic and worth watching on its own. I wouldn’t say it gripped me (I took my sweet time watching it) but it’s very well done.

April

Shrinking (2026, season 3

The Pitt (2026, season 2)

I made it to the last showing of Project Hail Mary in my local IMAX (before it got booted out for Michael). It was incredible. As a fan of the book I had been looking forward to this for months and loved the music, visuals, the message, and of course the sublime performances by Rocky and Ryan. Must watch!

Some nights we’d alternate between the high-stress The Pitt then swing into silly city with the Scrubs reboot. It was fun seeing just how different (worlds apart!) two hospital-set shows could be.

I watched and loved season one of The Pitt, last year and this season brought the goods. Intense! Just an incredible show, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I was a fan of the original Scrubs, it was one of those shows I bought episodes on iTunes back in the day and discovered a lot of great music I still love to this day (The Shins, Colin Hay, R.E.M. etc.). I think they did a good job bringing the show back and I’m looking forward to future seasons.

- [*Kumail Nanjiani: Night Thoughts*](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/1529419-kumail-nanjiani-night-thoughts) (2025, standup special)
- [*Bugonia*](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/701387-bugonia) (2025, movie). Stars [Stone](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/54693-emma-stone), [Plemons](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/88124-jesse-plemons), and directed by [Lanthimos](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/122423))
- [*All Creatures Great & Small*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/108255-all-creatures-great-small/) (2025, season 6)

*The Roses* was a fun and silly movie directed by [Jay Roach](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/6737-jay-roach) who did *Meet the Parents* and *Austin Powers* (an incredibly formative movie series for me). I’m glad movies like this are still getting made but I wouldn’t say it was great by any stretch of the imagination.

Kumail’s new special was very funny and I recommend checking it out. I mostly know [him](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/466505-kumail-nanjiani) from [*Silicon Valley*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/60573-silicon-valley) and a few other [bits](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/33922-portlandia/episodes?credit_id=64ed2ad81feac10138dc0564&person_id=4de206001103b90c970c098f) and [bobs](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/416477-the-big-sick) so it was nice seeing him doing solo standup.

*Bugonia* is a work of art and has a ~~fun~~ bizarre twist.

*All Creatures Great and Small* continues to be our post-holidays wholesome cup of cheer we all desperately need in January. Quaint, low-stakes, and farm antics about. I especially like [Samuel West](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/54447-samuel-west) and seeing him in [*Slow Horses*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/95480-slow-horses/episodes?credit_id=624955df0582240051df6f6a&person_id=4bc8a58d017a3c122d03edd0) is a treat.

## February
- [*The Night Manager*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/61859-the-night-manager) (2026, season 2)
- [*Sherlock*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/19885-sherlock) (2010-2017, seasons 1-4)
- [*Malcolm in the Middle*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/2004-malcolm-in-the-middle) (2000-2007) watched seasons 2 and 3, still watching season 4.

*The Night Manager* season 1 from 2016 is an all-timer. After radio silence after 10 years, I’m not sure season 2 lived up to those heights but it was damn good.

## March
- [*The Paper*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/253941-untitled-greg-daniels-and-michael-koman-mockumentary) (2025, season 1)
- [*Fallout*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/106379-fallout) (2024, season 1)

As big fans of *The Office* I sat on *The Paper* at first. I knew eventually I’d check it out but wasn’t in any rush. This show eventually won me over but it took a little warming up. Similar to *The Office* or *Parks and Rec*, I expect them to find their voice and hit a stride in season 2.

I never played the game but enjoyed [Goggins](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/27740-walton-goggins) in [*White Lotus*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/111803-the-white-lotus/episodes?credit_id=6784f5f52256023dfd4e67d3&person_id=4bc89a59017a3c122d020128) and [Purnell](https://www.themoviedb.org/person/989325-ella-purnell) in *[Yellowjackets](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/117488-yellowjackets/episodes?credit_id=600e8cb92a210c0042a1e487&person_id=4f497f7919c2950a7c002641)*. The first episode is especially cinematic and worth watching on its own. I wouldn’t say it *gripped* me (I took my sweet time watching it) but it’s very well done.

## April
- [*Shrinking*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/136311-shrinking) (2026, season 3
- [*The Pitt*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/250307-the-pitt) (2026, season 2)
- [*Scrubs*](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/295778-scrubs) (2026, season 1)
- [*Project Hail Mary*](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/687163-project-hail-mary) (2026, movie)

I made it to the last showing of *Project Hail Mary* in my local IMAX (before it got booted out for *Michael*). It was incredible. As a fan of the [book](https://bookshop.org/p/books/project-hail-mary-a-novel-andy-weir/00f52c9d7f2ed7f2) I had been looking forward to this for *months* and loved the music, visuals, the message, and of course the sublime performances by Rocky and Ryan. Must watch!

Some nights we’d alternate between the high-stress *The Pitt* then swing into silly city with the *Scrubs* reboot. It was fun seeing just how different (worlds apart!) two hospital-set shows could be.

[I watched and loved](https://haglund.app/2026/01/14/all-the-movies-and-tv.html) season one of *The Pitt*, last year and this season brought the goods. Intense! Just an incredible show, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I was a fan of the original _Scrubs_, it was one of those shows I bought episodes on iTunes back in the day and discovered a lot of great music I still love to this day (The Shins, Colin Hay, R.E.M. etc.). I think they did a good job bringing the show back and I’m looking forward to future seasons.

While rumored heavily [this is big news](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/04/tim-cook-to-become-apple-executive-chairman-john-ternus-to-become-apple-ceo/). Big ships like Apple can’t turn around overnight but I am _optimistic_ about having a product person back at the helm.

Also: compare the humanness of the image of Tim Cook and John Ternus with the vapid [Sam and Jony announcement](https://openai.com/sam-and-jony/).

My first Mac was an iBook G4. I saved up all summer long doing my summer job to buy that thing. I waffled between the Mac mini at $500 and the iBook which sat around $1,000. I had an HP display, keyboard, and mouse so I seriously considered living the BYODKM dream and going with the mini to save some dough.

While hemming and hawing my dad said something like, yeah but this one you can take with you, which solidified my choice to get the 12” iBook. Paying roughly double stung but was absolutely the right call. I loved that thing’s pre-MagSafe plug, plastic shell, and the included silver iPod mini. I ended up using that HP setup with my iBook so I got a taste for the laptop-desktop lifestyle the Mac mini would have offered.

Now, 20 years later, you can get a $600 Mac mini or a $600 MacBook Neo. It brings its own DKM! While the M4 in the mini outperforms the Neo, there’s only one you can take with you.

I hope this new lower priced laptop helps a whole new generation fall in love with the Mac. My fascination with computers took hold with that iBook and never let go.

I return to Into the Aether because they continually pull at my heartstrings, the very core of me. From this week’s episode, Dice of Fate:

Smash for 3DS is weirdly the lost Smash game because the 1st game is like its own series, it plays so differently from the rest. I think the 64 one is awesome, but it’s very different and a lot slower. Melee, obviously, is Melee and hasn’t really left the conversation at all. And then Brawl was like the Star Wars prequels of the Smash games where it’s still in the conversation because people hate it so much. It highlighted what Melee did so well.

I played so much Brawl. Brawl was out towards the end of high school and beginning of college for me, so most of my college experience is probably playing Brawl with Dominic Nero in his dorm room, just like chatting about whatever while slipping as King Dedede. It’s a fun game, but it’s interesting to see people now yearn for Subspace Emissary when it was dunked on when it came out. Everyone was like, “this is such a slog to get the characters.” And now it’s like, “without Subspace Emissary you can’t call it Smash Ultimate.”

Aside from the part about Dom, I resonate with this so much. I’m a Smash kid through and through. I was hooked from the first time I saw Samus’ charge beam on the N64. High school and college was filled with nights of mix of Brawl and Melee.

Not to brag but I was famous (infamous?) for kicking everyone’s ass as Lucas with a sideways Wii Remote while everyone else demanded a “real” controller (Gamecube, natch). You can’t stop greatness.

How I Feel About AI Today

This post by Paul Ford covers so many aspects of AI coding. From job loss, devaluing the skills of humans, to recognizing the sheer wonder of what these supercomputers can accomplish. I find a twinge of hope in that we can use this this to solve problems that previously went unsolved:

I think of the friend at an immigration nonprofit who needs to click countless times, in mounting frustration, to generate critical reports. Or the small-business owners trying to operate everything with email and losing orders as a result. Or my doctor, whose time with patients is eaten up by having to tap furiously into the hospital’s electronic health record system.

After decades of stories like those, I believe there are millions, maybe billions, of software products that don’t exist but should: Dashboards, reports, apps, project trackers and countless others. People want these things to do their jobs, or to help others, but they can’t find the budget. They make do with spreadsheets and to-do lists.

One aspect not touched on in this article but is incredibly important, and one that so many people (myself included) have neglected to keep in mind recently: the foundation, the very core, of this technology is theft. Every line of code, every word, and every image used to train these models — and ultimately create a new class of billionaires with ultra concentrated wealth and power — were made by people. The creative and life fulfilling work of humans.

Unfortunately no one at the top cares about ethics and it’s impossible to think about how we could ever put the toothpaste back in the tube. I can only hope:

These AI companies realize they need to look out for the communities where they are building data centers to make their use of resources sustainable.

They also need to invest heavily to secure their own sources of computing components (ex. RAM) without fucking up all other industries.

I also desperately hope we can get our act together to establish regulations and protect workers. Profit-hungry execs continue slashing jobs left and right.

There are many issues with AI but it’s hard to not be interested by all this. It’s an insane time to be alive and I have no idea what’s going to happen in the next five years let alone 10.

Despite my serious qualms with everything, I must admit I gave the jackals $20 last month to build a few apps with Claude Code. One app aims to help people in my community connect in-person and so that’s one way I justify using these services.

(I also have issues with the oil industry and what they’re doing to our planet but I also occasionally drive nearly 200 miles to see my parents. This shit’s messy and no one is perfect.)

People want these things to do their jobs, or to help others, but they can’t find the budget. They make do with spreadsheets and to-do lists.

One aspect not touched on in this article but is _incredibly_ important, and one that so many people (myself included) have neglected to keep in mind recently: the foundation, the very core, of this technology is theft. Every line of code, every word, and every image used to train these models — and ultimately create a new class of billionaires with ultra concentrated wealth and power — were made by _people_. There are _many_ issues with AI but it’s hard to not be interested by all this. It’s an insane time to be alive and I have no idea what’s going to happen in the next five years let alone 10.

Despite my serious qualms with everything, I must admit I gave the jackals $20 last month to build a few apps with Claude Code. One app aims to help people in my community connect in-person and so that’s one way I justify using these services.

when AI’s figure out how to put “(not AI)” in the title, we’re in a lot of trouble.
