It is Time for Ocarina of Time, again (again)
I am very excited about the Ocarina of Time remake. I watched the direct with my 2 year old and the symphony music before the gameplay reveal was incredibly moving. I can’t wait for my kid to start hearing this music I love so much.
What Nintendo is doing with the remake is incredibly special. This beloved masterpiece is finally getting the glow-up it deserves. My hope is that, 28 years from now, my kid will think back to the Switch 2 version of Ocarina in the same way I look back at the Nintendo 64 version. Knowing Aonuma, Miyamoto, Kondo — legends who brought the original to life — are involved, I believe they will do it right. We’re in good hands.
I fired up the original game on my Analogue 3D and the original is still sublime. So cinematic, despite its graphical limitations. I haven’t played in a few years (last time was on my Mac via Ship of Harkinian). Just a few minutes ago now I entered the castle grounds after the Deku Tree, and am looking forward to the rest of my play-through ahead of November 4.
I know there’s a lot of negativity online with how odd Young Link looks. I get it. But if you watch the trailer, it’s clear that they did a great job on literally everything else. It’s gonna be stunning.
Slightly off-topic, but in the latest Into the Aether (52min), Stephen had this to say:
The only time I will be an angry gamer on the internet is if they remake Wind Waker in this style.
I will be like, how dare you?
This is a terrifying hypothetical! But I don’t fear this. We all know the Wind Waker’s style is the source of that game’s charm. Even where the 2013 revampmade a few whiffs (like making the sky too realistic, etc), they didn’t stray too far from the original intent.
The original Ocarina pursued a realistic art style, but was limited by the tech of the time. (Looking at it with 2026, it doesn’t seem realistic.) The remake’s art direction at its core is mostly true to its original intent. I do wonder if they explored a direction where they hewed towards the game’s concept art instead of this hyper-realism style, but the world may never know.
